(951) 800-8213Glaucoma can be a scary condition, as it can eventually lead to vision loss. Though no cure exists, medication is available to help manage, stop or slow progression. Learn how in this guide from our team at Focus Vision Optometry, our optometrist in Beaumont, Calimesa, Redlands, Moreno Valley, San Jacinto, and Sundance, CA.
Glaucoma is a term used for eye diseases that damage the optic nerve, which can lead to severe vision loss or even complete blindness. Typically, this occurs due to pressure in the eye, often because the fluid in the eye cannot drain properly. That fluid build-up can impact the optic nerve and the ability to see. Sometimes patients may have normal eye pressure and still suffer progressive nerve damage, which is called low tension glaucoma (LTG) or normal tension glaucoma (NTG).
No medication can cure glaucoma. However, medication can help manage it and slow or stop the progression of vision loss.
Eye drops are the primary source of treatment for glaucoma. These are not the typical eye drops you find at your local retailer. These are prescription eye drops designed to lower the pressure in the eye. How they do so depend on the eye drops you are prescribed.
One type of eye drops lowers pressure by promoting fluid drainage in your eye. Another type works to reduce the amount of fluid your eye produces. As a result, you might experience burning or redness of the eyes, headaches, or other unwanted side effects. If you do, talk to your eye doctor, as a change in prescription might be necessary, or we may need to medically treat your side effects.
Your eye doctor will recommend a specific number of times you should use them a day, which could be up to four times. You must follow these directions, as they are given according to your specific needs.
